In my early days as a potter, I was attracted to bright, colorful
Mediterranean pottery and spent much time hand-painting designs
on my pots. While I still love these pieces, I find myself drawn
increasingly to the simplicity of Asian pots — their subtle
designs and colors. I prefer the look of the reduction-fired celadon and temoku glazes, which have been used for centuries in Japan, Korea, and China. However, since I am limited to firing with electricity (rather than gas) in my own studio, I have spent time developing glazes that are similar in appearance and quality to these ancient glaze formulas. My Asian-inspired designs include rice bowls, soy
bottles, tea bowls, saki sets, square serving dishes, and raku pieces.
